The year is 1891. Here’s an interesting photo of an Indiana bill poster, hanging a tourist poster of Lake Maxinkuckee. A moose is displayed prominently on the poster – so, I guess the reasoning was, “If the moose like Lake Maxinkuckee, you will, too”.

The year is 1932. On May 20th, five years to the day after Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic in the Spirit Of St. Louis, Amelia Earhart took off from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, bound for Paris, France. Due to poor weather conditions and plagued by mechanical problems, Amelia was forced to land in a farmer’s pasture near Londonderry, Ireland. But she had successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean – for which Congress awarded her the Distinguished Flying Cross. Then in July 1937, on an attempted flight around the world, Amelia’s plane vanished in the clouds somewhere near Howland Island in the mid-Pacific. Her plane was never found.

The year is 1916. We’re looking at one of the most colorful characters of the Old West – William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. A Union soldier in the Civil War, a scout, a buffalo hunter, and by his own account, a Pony Expressz rider – Bill is best known for organizing “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West”, a large circus-like show filled with Cowboys & Indians, horses, and plenty of shootin’ by such stars as Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane. Even Chief Sitting Bull got in on the act. Buffalo Bill’s traveling show toured North America and Europe. They performed before presidents, kings, queens, even the Pope. Buffalo Bill Cody became synonymous with the American West. Naturally, such a colorful gent deserves a color portrait. American Photo Colorizing is happy to oblige.

The year is 1944. Here’s a nice slice of American life on the home front during World War II. A radio may be playing softly in the background. It was the era of the Big Bands: Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, The Andrews Sisters. When two teenage girls burned the midnight oil, the pillow talk could last all night, and often did.

The year is 1853. Seth Eastman, a reknown illustrator of Native American life, poses atop Dighton Rock in Massachusetts. The strange writings adorning the rock have been the subject of speculation since the late 1600s, when it was discovered. The most likely explanation is that the markings were inscribed by Portuguese sailors. Dighton Rock’s markings include the Portuguese Coat of Arms, three crosses, the name of the ship’s captain – Miguel Corte Real, and the date 1511. Mystery solved?

The year is 1944. This is the crew of my father’s B-52 during World War II. In the center is the plane’s bombadier, Joseph Heller – author of the great American war novel, “Catch 22”. My father was the pilot, known in Catch 22 as Hungry Joe. The photo was taken on Corsica.

The year is 1864. A central Virginia town at the junction of the James and Appommatax Rivers, City Point became a critical Union port and supply hub during the Civil War. It’s also the likely location of this fantastic photo showing three classic locomotives. Color is by yours truly at American Photo Colorizing.com.

The year is 1939. What can I say? This delivery horse just reminds me a whole lot of Mr. Ed. The photo was taken by Marion Post Wolcott, photojournalist for the Farm Security Administration. It was the winter of 1939/40 in the village of Woodstock, Vermont.

The year is 1879. If you’re a baseball fan, as I am, you’re wondering what it would have been like to watch this varsity baseball team from Brown University, Rhode Island in action. They’ve got standard uniforms and tapered baseball bats. Baseball had come a long way since 1859, the year the Knickerbocker Rules were adopted, laying the foundation of modern baseball. Little did these fellows realize that 134 years later, they’d be displayed in full-color on “Trending History”.
