The year is 1938. American Photo Colorizing pays tribute to a Hollywood legend and great American, Shirley Temple Black. Here’s Shirley in a barnyard scene from her film hit, “Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm”. A number of artists have attempted to colorize this photo over the past few years, but I think we’ve produced the definitive one. Shirley’s films would’ve made perfect color romps. Thankfully, she’s left us a wealth of classics.

Summer is here, and we’re on a Surfin’ Safari back to the year 1962. Here’s a brand new Rock & Roll band from Hawthorne, California in Los Angeles’ South Bay. They call themselves The Beach Boys, and they range in age from 13 to 21.

This photo is from the teen documentary “One Man’s Challenge”, produced by Dale Smallin, and featuring the young Beach Boys performing their song, “Surfin’ Safari” at the Azusa Teen Club.

Due to the nature of the original film we captured the image from – the clarity isn’t pristine. But, what a cool piece of Rock & Roll history!

BATTLE OF THE SOMME (1916)

The year is 1916. A photographer captured this action shot of British soldiers going “over the top”, during the Battle of the Somme in northern France. More than a million soldiers were wounded or killed during the battle between July 1st and November 18th.

We’re now in the 2nd year of commemorating the 100th anniversary of the “war to end all wars”. Not only did World War One not put an end to all wars – but, it laid the groundwork for Germany to launch invasions throughout Europe, culminating in an even more destructive second world war. Ironically, the site of the battle, the River Somme got its name from a Celtic word meaning “tranquility”.

CLAUDE MONET (1922)

The year is 1922. Here is French impressionist painter, Claude Monet, relaxing on the Japanese footbridge at his garden in Giverny. With this scene, I’ve attempted to incorporate aspects of Monet’s own artwork in my photo colorizing.

I decided to depict Monet alone in his garden, so it was necessary to remove the other gentleman from the picture.To this revised image I added my colors – and Voila!

We now have Claude Monet in full-color – in his garden (also in full-color). All that’s missing is the classical music . . . “Here she comes now singin’ Monet Monet!”. Thank you, Tommy James & The Shondells. Baby boomers might get this corny ’60sreference.
