The year is 1920. Here is the Ford Mansion in Morristown, New Jersey. The mansion was constructed between 1772 and 1774 for Jacob and Theodosia Ford. During the winter of 1779-80, General George Washington used the mansion as his headquarters, with 10,000 colonial troops encamped at nearby Jockey Hollow.
This photo was a snap for me to colorize, as the mansion and its grounds have changed very little since this 1920 photograph was taken. I was able to match colors with modern color photographs. I grew up in the Morristown area, and visited the Ford Mansion and Jockey Hollow, where the army was encamped during the harsh Winter of 1777.
As a youngster, it was easy to see why General Washington chose the Ford mansion to base his daily operations from. It was across the street from an excellent Chinese restaurant, the Tea House of the August Moon – and around the corner from Dominick’s pizza. Kids know what’s important.
