The year is 1870. This is the year Macy’s began creating festive Christmas window displays. They also launched another department store first in 1870 – the in-store Santa Claus. Whether he was the same Macy’s Kris Kringle who appeared in “Miracle On 34th Street” seventy-seven years later, is open to speculation. H.R. Macy was a master of marketing. Starting with a small dry goods store in Massachusetts, he moved his location to Manhattan, and today Macy’s is to America – what Mom, Apple Pie, and the Fourth of July are to . . . America. Huh. That sounded so much more profound in my head.

Christmas is coming on like Gangbusters. It’s time to look through your family photo collection. A beautifully-colorized image of your ancestors (suitable for enlarging and framing) makes a wonderful keepsake for the entire family. This year, “Give the Christmas Present of Christmas Past!”
