The year is 1865. It is March 4th. Abraham Lincoln is being sworn-in for a second term as President of the United States. In 36 days Lee would surrender to Grant at a farmhouse in Appomattox Court House, Virginia. In 41 days Lincoln would be shot by John Wilkes Booth at Washington’s Ford Theater.

Lincoln left us these eloquent words on that March day nearly 150 years ago, “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”
