The year is 1899. Last week the American Photo Colorizing blog featured Thomas Alva Edison in his 1902 electric “horseless carriage”. Today, we have Belgium’s Camille Jenatzy and his streamlined electric race car . . . or rocket-on-wheels. He called his marvel, “La Jamais Contente”. It was incredibly fast for its time. Broke the world speed record at 100 kilometres per hour (or 62 miles per hour) near Paris, where this photo was taken 115 years ago.

In 2008, when I first colorized this image, online source materials were not as plentiful as they are now. There’s still a lot of room for improvement, but today, I can usually find detail information and photos to match my colors to. But, 6 years ago this wasn’t as often the case. And so, in 2008, I chose red for the color of the car.

In preparing today’s blog notes, I located an actual color photo of Camille Jenatzy’s car in a French museum, where it’s on display. So, I worked into the wee small hours of morning making the color corrections. Now, here is La Jamais Contente as it would have looked on the day of the race.
